Concorde Career College -  Health Careers - R.N. and Surgical Assistant or Assisting  Program

Recently I talked to a woman who is almost done taking her on campus and online courses for the surgical assistant program at a Concorde Career College  - School.  I wasn't aware that there was a surgical assistant program available anywhere, being a nurse myself.  Perhaps this is worth checking into if you have an interest in that area. One way to get an online degree. 

Should You Become an R.N. (Registered Nurse) Instead?

However you can become an R.N. in 2 years and then specialize in surgery and become a surgical assistant that way.  I'm not  saying not to do the surgical assisting program but I wonder how helpful they are in helping people get a job after graduation or completion  of the program and I think  there may be  much more opportunity if you can get your R.N. instead.  I don't know how long their program is but I know she takes some classes online.  Some would probably have to be done in a lab setting so would require going to a Concorde Career College - School in your area.  We have quite a few listed in our Portland Oregon area phone book.  Not to be confused with Concordia College also I Portland.

Nursing - R.N. Program at Clark College and Surgical Assistant

I went through the two-year R.N. program at Clark College in Vancouver, Washington many years ago and it was fantastic.  I earned a Certificate in Proficiency in Professional Nursing and an Associate in Arts.  Of course there were no computers and no Internet then but I am sure many of the classes now can be taken online.  Check with your local colleges and community colleges to see what health-related and nursing and surgical-related classes can be taken online.

With my professional nurse's training I could have easily gone into surgical assisting or been an R.N. surgical assistant.  You get a good rotation through surgery during your nurse's training and get a good idea if you would want to be a surgical nurse or not.  You'll get most of your experience on the job in the surgical unit helping with surgeries after you have graduated though.  Probably starting out as one of the assistants in minor surgeries and then moving on to major surgeries and a variety of operations.

There are long hours for more difficult surgeries and you will be on your feet a lot and unavailable.  So keep this in mind.  Talk to people who work in surgery now and see if you can handle it physically.
